Lumbini is a Buddhist pilgrimage site in the Rupandehi District of Province No. 5 in Nepal. It is the place where, according to Buddhist tradition, Queen Mahamayadevi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama in 563 BCE. Gautam, who achieved Enlightenment some time around 528 BCE, became the Buddha and founded Buddhism. Lumbini is one of many magnets for pilgrimage that sprang up in places pivotal to the life of the Buddha. Lumbini has a number of older temples, including the Mayadevi Temple, and various new temples, funded by Buddhist organisations from various countries, have been completed or are still under construction. Many monuments, monasteries and a museum, and the Lumbini International Research Institute are also within the holy site.
It was my first time in Nepal and I treated myself to a lovely hotel Dwarika's and can highly recommend it and have. Enjoyed visiting all the world heritage sites and waslucky enough to have a guide who was reliable and very knowledeable. Very flexible too as I don't like travelling in groups for this specific purpose.
I went to Nepal way back in 2005 November. I should say, Its my most favorite destination ever. You get public transport in terms of Shuttle bus, Taxi both of them are quite affordable. I stayed there for 15 days, and the only thing that bothered me was the threat of fight between the maoists and king. Except that, everything is Awesome in Nepal.
Too many memorable moments to mention - the people, the splendour of the mountain views, relaxing in the Garden of Dreams, the bustle of the streets of Thamel, and sights in and around Kathmandu. The trekking, the sight of Rhino, Crocodiles and lovely Sambar Deer at Chitwan. Pasaputinath and the atmosphere around the riverside ghats.
